The Trail Leading to “Impossible”

Max and I have started working to finish “Impossible” as a single. Trying to figure out all the instrumentation is really exciting, but I need to curb my disappointment when a version doesn’t make me cry. 🙂 My gauge for how effective a version is depends on whether it brings me to tears or not because the track really needs to hit me with fresh emotion in order to be working. I just heard the first version and I was nearly crushed because it didn’t make me cry. I sent a rather blunt email in response to Max; I tend to be very frank in my communications whether positive or negative as I think it’s really important to be clear about what you think and want when defining the shape of a track. Can’t wait to hear the next version.

Max is great to work with and is very talented. It takes resilience to have an artist throw criticism at you and not take it personally. I’ve always loved working with him, and I’m really happy to have the chance to work on another track as a team again.

Joy

Amazing Saturday, went for a swim, worked on music, had lunch with good friends, fantastic weather, and just had a great voice lesson working on one of my original songs. My voice instructor told me the 15/8 time signature totally works, and I’m really excited to keep working on it until it’s good enough to perform live. Can’t wait!

ALL TRACKS FINALIZED…EP IS DONE!

Fresh ideas blossom

Working on two new songs. I finished writing one of them six years ago and put it on the back burner for years…it felt great to pick it up again and still be able to work on it like it was fresh in my mind. Both of these will hopefully go on a new album soon.

Sudden Inspiration

Just started putting together the skeleton of a song I finished writing six years ago. It’s probably the most straightforward song I’ve ever composed and I’m hoping all the experience I’ve gained writing the songs for the EP will make this one easier. I’m excited to see it come together. The lyrics are particularly relevant the current time frame in my life. Wish me luck, world!

Vocals Done!

Two nights of vocal recordings done…Loved every second of it. About to drink some herbal magic mix to repair my vocal chords. I torched my back as well and the sprain’s resurfaced again. Almost time to take my exhausted body to bed. My world is at peace tonight. I love you, Universe!

Last song finished!

I finished up a draft of the only song left on the album last night. Now I need to find a producer/sound engineer to help me polish the arrangements and master the tracks. It feels great, and I really, really hope I can finish up the album in the next couple of months.

Ah, She Drowns, She Drowns!

I went swimming today, and it felt great. Over the past few weeks it’s become a regular activity, which is doing me a world of good. I feel like I can work out all my issues in the pool, and the water just holds me up gently.

Today has brought me back to Lana Del Rey’s Video Games, which sucks. As long as I keep it playing in my head in bits and not out loud on Itunes I should be ok. It’s really sad to see the end of a relationship, and to watch people pull away from each other even as they don’t want to. Our lives have become pretty complex, and people have built up a lot of protective layers to guard themselves. People are really afraid to be vulnerable. I was prone to putting up walls when I was younger, and I grew up being shy and having a small circle of friends. But as I grew older, I realized how important it was to allow people in, as you gain so much from it.

When I was young, it felt like I had some control or power because I held back parts of myself. Part of it comes from being an introvert, which I cannot (and don’t want to) change about myself and am perfectly comfortable with. But the rest of it points to having deep seated insecurities. I was lucky, I grew up in South East Asia on a bunch of islands. People there are really mellow, and really open, friendly and caring. I learned a lot because of it. I also grew up around a lot of people from different cultures who moved around a lot, so you have to get good at getting to know people quickly and opening up to them because otherwise you’ll miss out on really great people and always feel lost in the sea of constant change.

Which brings me to my current state. I really let go this time, and I’m glad I did. Even though I’m feeling overwhelmed right now as I’m trying to keep up with the job hunt. I sincerely hope I’ll feel safe enough to do it again someday.

The one very constructive thing that’s come out of the dips in my mood is an artistic period; I’m coming up with a pretty decent number of song ideas and really wish I could spend more time working on them and recording the ones for the short album I want to finish. This would be the perfect time to get in a studio.

New Friends and Collaborators

Chris (who produced the music for Porcelain Doll) introduced me to a percussionist friend in Germany a few days ago, and his friend wrote back saying he and his wife (also a percussionist) would come back with some ideas for another song. This is song requires strong rhythm instruments, so I’m thrilled about this possibility. Fingers crossed everything works out. 🙂

Hurrah!

Just finished writing the last song I had left to finish for my album, and now I can focus on production and rehearsing. Really happy, as this song had left me hanging for quite some time. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to finish it. But it’s now done! Yay!
