Women In Music

The Billboard Women In Music Awards was this past weekend and it was just full of amazing talent. A night to truly embrace and celebrate the progress for women in the music industry.

From Missy Elliot to Selena Gomez to Lana Del Rey, it was night of superstar women all in one place.

Lady Gaga accepted the great honor of Women of the Year at the ceremony.

With her music, strong business acumen, sense of purpose, and avant-garde style, she broke through the music industry to be immensely successful on her own terms. Despite having gained so much fame and success, her approach to people and fans is down to earth and genuine. She’s heavily involved in giving back to the community and wants to make a difference. She’s truly an inspiring artist and role model.

New Song: My Imaginary Friend

With Halloween and Day of the Dead fast approaching, I thought I’d release a song with some creepy chords and undertones to get in the spirit.

“My Imaginary Friend” is a conversation between myself and my imaginary friend. The inspiration for the song came from a long distance relationship I was in that left me feeling desperate and lonely. Love is a complicated emotion and I often would pretend to have conversations throughout the day that, in reality, only existed in my head. The relationship was difficult and toxic and these imaginary conversations made me feel alive, living in a fantasy world I created and controlled. The lyrics were written during long trips and train rides and was an outlet to understand my feelings.

I’m sure many people can relate to this experience and I hope you enjoy. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Happy Halloween!

Hope. Ambition. Dreams.

We forget that these are people and could become invaluable members of the community in their new home. Albert Einstein was an immigrant in the US. Nabokov emigrated to the US from Russia, Marie Curie moved to France from Poland.

Music has always been an outlet for me to understand and deal with these types of issues and emotions. A few years ago, dealing with my own struggles with the US immigration system, I wrote a song about my experience. It’s about a 13 year old girl who dreams of moving to America to start an amazing life and hopes of becoming a star. I think it’s about time to start producing it. *Stay tuned*

ReverbNation Charts – Ranked # 3!

We are now number 3 on the ReverbNation Indie charts for San Francisco, CA! Really grateful to everyone’s help in getting there. www.reverbnation.com/samaya2

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve watched our rank climb in the charts. I was stuck at 20something for a while. “Impossible” got a chance to be featured under Crowd Picks on ReverbNation last week, and we shot up to number 3 for the San Francisco Indie charts within a week. I haven’t had a lot of traction on other media channels like YouTube and Soundcloud, so it felt so good to see that a larger number people actually liked the music I was making.

Official Start to Recording Vocals!

Studio Picture

It’s started again, I’m back in the studio this year. The picture above features voice teacher, keys player and producer extraordinaire, Robert Robinson, in a room with one of the best sound systems I have ever come into contact with. Everything sounded amazing in there. We finished recording vocals for two songs. My voice started to fray a little after 1.5 hours of singing, so we’re going to work on the 3rd in the first set this weekend. I’ve been plagued by allergies for the last couple of months for the first time in my life, which has thrown some interesting curve balls my way. 🙂 Wish me luck!

Marian Hill

I discovered one of my favourite bands a couple of months ago, Marian Hill. I went to watch Marian Hill and Jack Garratt play last Friday, and the show was amazing. Marian Hill, in particular, was great. The crowd was very inclusive and friendly, and the lead singer’s grandmother and aunt were in the audience right in front of us. It was a lot of fun to meet the band’s relatives and friends. The band members were also really friendly and took the time to speak to people at the show.
